Fine Tooth Comb

Jan 05 2010

So, I’ve got some CSS and a WordPress skeleton, even some cute JavaScript i cooked up. I’ve been focused on layout and getting real, and now it is time to  refactor the code.

I figure a neophyte’s systemic approach would be to address each element of the site from the bottom up. An ordered list that will surely branch:

  1. PHP wrapping of HTML(et.al.) code blocks
  2. Tumblr image fetch JS testing (sometimes it just fails)
  3. CSS style organization
  4. Addressing Accessibility and any Semantic Web failures on the site
  5. Updating the Error pages (404, WTF IE6, etc.)

After I find some ways of addressing these concerns, I’ll make a cute graphic and explain what I’ve done.

Better, or maybe consistant?

Jan 03 2010

Hey there, over the last few updates I’ve standardized the post entry HTML across the various WP pages, changed the layout of the header & footer, changed the color scheme from all gray to something that makes more sense, and lastly fixed Delicious Bold in the windows browsers.

Comments have been closed to non members. With no other members and the questionable value of comments, I may turn them off until a need arrises. After a few more edits like that, Ill start adding posts and project pages that don’t revolve around actually creating this site, and verbnoun.com will then be officially ’launched’. Ill end this post with a quote from my friend and mentor Roast Beef. ” To me a computer is basically a piano!”

Get Going

Time to write for Verb Noun. Right now the site is various shades of battleship gray, accented with neon late-aughts squiggles. The colors match the drab layout and I want to shoot the site with a gun. I am not a fan of the font I tricked your browser into displaying either, well I like the font, just not for my body text.

You sank it

The Header area is anemic; the logo (only V2) has got to go, the contact info is in the wrong place and totally boring. The Body area screams BLOG so loud I want to go back to the days of the ‘homepage‘ or ‘online journal’. The Footer has all the normal BLOGGY links on it and some obnoxious title areas that are longer than the data they label. Furthermore, there are no interesting layout graphics on the whole page, no depth, and no nuance.

One thing this site has going for it is that little tumblr feed on the right. I wrote a JS that grabs my tumblr images and used masonry to stack them nice.

All I want is a genre defining, paradigm shifting, mega-quake website that will showcase the genius that is my design skills. I guess I better get going then.
